Tawaf Studio is a working ceramics studio nestled in the heart of Kashmir, long celebrated for its craft traditions, breathtaking landscapes, and quiet resilience.
Founded by artist Shamshad Khan, the studio is both a personal workspace and a collaborative ground.
Since its founding, Shamshad has worked with local terracotta, slipware, earthenware & presently in stoneware, often collaborating with local artisans—from Nakashi painters and wicker weavers to traditional potter—in a shared effort to reimagine Kashmiri pottery for today.
At Tawaf Studio, every piece is handmade, unique, and intentionally minimal. We don’t repeat our designs—each item is shaped by hand and carries its own character, texture, and small differences that reflect the process of its making. This is the opposite of factory-made: no moulds, no mass production, no replicas.
While we do produce in small batches, we gladly accept orders for similar forms if a customer connects with a specific piece. Each item will still carry its own subtle variation—because that's the beauty of handcraft.
All our ceramics are 100% food-safe, made with non-toxic glazes and tested for everyday use. We work with a variety of clays, including stoneware, terracotta, and locally sourced clay—blending traditional materials with contemporary forms and finishes.
Whether it’s a bowl, cup, casserole, or serving platter, our work is designed to be lived with—functional, tactile, and quietly beautiful.
Since every piece at Tawaf Studio is handmade and one-of-a-kind, we do not maintain a fixed catalog or shop inventory. Instead, our latest work is regularly shared on our Instagram feed. To purchase a piece, we invite you to follow us there and stay updated with what’s fresh out of the kiln.
We understand that buying handmade work online is deeply personal. If, for any reason, the piece doesn’t feel right once it reaches you, we offer a 100% refund—no questions asked.
We believe that ceramics should feel right in your hands and your space—so this is our way of keeping things simple, honest, and open.
Please reach us at tawafstudios@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Yes, all the glazes used at Tawaf Studio are handmade in-house. We don’t use commercial glazes, as they often contain materials we prefer to avoid.
Our glaze palette is primarily inspired by Japanese glaze traditions, including:
Making our own glazes ensures that every piece remains non-toxic, food-safe, and aligned with the overall aesthetic of the studio.
We don’t conduct glaze-specific courses or workshops, but we’re happy to answer questions or discuss glaze choices with fellow potters and collectors.
Occasionally—it depends on the project. If it’s something I find creatively engaging or aligned with the studio’s aesthetic, I may take it on.
Feel free to share your idea with us via WhatsApp or email, and if it resonates, we’ll take it forward from there.
Shamshad Khan is a ceramic artist, photographer, and visual communicator whose creative journey spans over more than two decades. In 2021, she transitioned fully into ceramics and founded Tawaf Studio. The studio began in a small one-room flat and has gradually grown into a dedicated workshop surrounded by orchards and mountains, where she now lives and works.
Before moving into ceramics, Shamshad worked extensively in the field of photography and design. She has collaborated with some of India’s leading advertising agencies, producing visual campaigns across multiple genres. Her portfolio includes work for publishing houses, design studios, top hospitality brands, and corporations such as Tata, United Breweries, ITC, and several luxury hotels.
Her practice later expanded into humanitarian work, where she served as a senior photographer with UNICEF, documenting stories that required sensitivity, depth, and visual storytelling grounded in empathy.
Alongside her professional career, Shamshad has also been deeply involved in photographic education. She has taught at several of the country’s top photography institutions, and conducted workshops across India. Her work in fine art photography remains a deeply personal pursuit, reflecting a quiet, introspective voice that has always drawn her closer to the natural world. Whether through light, texture, or stillness, nature has remained a constant thread in her visual language.
